Relational Outreach

During the school year, we operate MONDAY NIGHT UNDERGROUND, a weekly gathering time for 30 high school students in which staff listen to students as they dig into tough issues affecting urban teenagers, build redemptive relationships, and explain the basic costs and freedoms of following Christ.  It meets Monday nights from 6:30 to 8:30 pm.  For more information, contact Mark Williams, Community Outreach Coordinator.  In the summer, THE UNDERGROUND is an eight-week program for 40 students that features recreational activities, breakfast and lunch, age-specific experiential education activities, outdoor trips, a week-long service trip, and occasional “nights out.”  A low staff-to-student ratio allows for highly relational activities.  It runs Monday through Friday, from 8:30 am to 2:00 pm.  To get involved, contact Lorenze Jefferson, High School Associate.  Our staff also operates a BASKETBALL TEAM, which offers young men opportunities to enjoy a favorite sport and to compete in a city-wide league.  The program includes practice time, Bible study, homework requirements, and rich relationship-building with caring coaches and teammates.  To try out, contact Lorenze Jefferson.

Leadership Development

For 36 select students in grades 10-12, we offer LEADERS-IN-TRAINING, a three-year leadership training opportunity that prepares participants for college and the work world.  It includes small group job training, one-on-one mentoring, small group Bible study, and volunteer service activities.  Those who successfully complete these components are then eligible for paid work experience, assisting our staff in one of our other ministries.  Applicants must be in tenth grade and be at least 14 years old.  Interested students should call Donnie Friel, Leadership Development Coordinator, at 412/321-1678, for an application.  We enroll students only twice a year. Applications are due no later than Tuesday, September 18, 2007, for the fall semester and Tuesday, February 12, 2008, for the spring semester.

Our PRE-L.I.T. program engages 10 selected ninth grade students in job training, decision-making skills, and helping others through service projects.  Those who complete one year in the Pre-L.I.T. program receive a small stipend and may compete for a position in the Leaders-In-Training program.  Applications are due no later than September 10, 2007.  The program begins in September, and meets every Monday and Wednesday from 4:00 to 5:00 pm.  Interested students should contact Donnie Friel, Leadership Development Coordinator, for an application.

In collaboration with the National Foundation for Teaching Entrepreneurship, we identify high school students who are interested in starting their own businesses, teach them basic skills, and train them in writing a business plan.  These ENTREPRENEURS-IN-TRAINING are eligible to receive a one time financial investment made by The Pittsburgh Project.  Class times occur on Tuesdays and Thursdays during the school year from 4:00 to 5:00 pm.  Interested students must complete an application in September and should contact Donnie Friel, Leadership Development Coordinator, with any questions.
